Emil John Cervenak

Emil John Cervenak passed away peacefully at home on August 9, 2026, which also marked the birthday of his late mother. He was surrounded by the love and care of his family who will miss him immensely.

Born in Jersey City, Emil spent his early years there before moving to Rahway at the age of fifteen. After graduating from Rahway High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Following his military service, Emil built a distinguished career with Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Company, which later became part of The Williams Companies. Over the course of approximately forty years, he advanced to several regional leadership positions, and along the way forged many lasting friendships that he continued to value long after retirement.

Emil embraced retirement with the same enthusiasm and creativity that characterized every stage of his life. He was a lifelong sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing and coaching basketball and baseball. He also loved golfing with family, friends, and co-workers. In 2010, he scored his first and only hole-in-one, which he would not have witnessed if his son didn’t tell him to keep watching his ball - he had turned away thinking it stopped rolling. In his later years, he enjoyed painting natural scenery and fishing and crabbing with his grandchildren.

He was a gifted and imaginative individual. He loved woodworking and built many impressive items, including toys for his grandchildren and a magnificent replica of a late 18th-century sailing warship. He delighted family and friends with an amazing board game he invented with unpredictable twists that turned victory into crushing defeat with lots of laughter-filled chaos. His massive creativity, incredible sense of humor, and pure ingenuity brought joy to all who knew him.

Emil was deeply connected to his Slovak heritage and remained rooted in the traditions of the Byzantine Catholic faith. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Rahway. His faith was a quiet but enduring presence in his life, guiding him with values of kindness, humility, compassion, and generosity.

Emil was predeceased by his parents, Michael Cervenak and Anna Cervenak (née Holub); his brothers, Valentine Cervenak and William Cervenak; and his son-in-law, Timothy Browning.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Kathleen Cervenak (née Morony); his loving son, Michael Cervenak and wife Dana; his caring daughter, Christine Browning; his cherished grandchildren, Kierstin Cervenak, Brandon Cervenak, and Emily Browning; as well as many extended family members and friends.

Above all, Emil will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, veteran, and friend whose creativity, warmth, and love of family left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing at Countryside Funeral Home, located at 724 US-202, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 4:30 p.m. with Fr. Jim of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Hillsborough officiating. Military honors, committal words and interment will take place at St. Gertrude Cemetery, located at 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia, NJ 07067 on Friday, August 14, at 12:30 p.m.
