North Brunswick, NJ—James Vincent "Jim" Pickering, Jr., 67, entered into eternal life on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Brunswick, son of Grace (nee Matts) Pickering and the late James Vincent Pickering, Sr., he lived in New Brunswick and East Brunswick, NJ before residing in North Brunswick upon marriage.
Jim faithfully served his country with the United States Navy upon graduating from high school in the early 1970s. Jim retired after dedicated employment as a business administrator with Millstone Township in Millstone, NJ. His distinguished career in law enforcement and public service began at Rutgers University Police Department where he retired as a Captain of Detectives and was one of the very first members of the Middlesex County SWAT team. During this time he studied criminal justice and ultimately earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration. Owner and operator of Pickering & Associates of North Brunswick, his company specialized in private investigation. He was a state and federal expert in safety and security, police policy and procedure, and firearms.
Jim was president of the FOP Union in his early years on the force. He was categorized as a "lifetime master," the highest recognition awarded for excellence in shooting and had achieved the highest ranking in national competition shooting, ranking in the top three in the nation and holds countless titles. He was township administrator and Chief of Police for the Borough of Helmetta. Jim also taught in the Police Academy. Dedicate to his family, Jim had coached all three of his children's athletic teams and was always involved in their school activities, trips, and events. Spending time with family and friends, but especially his grandchildren were one of Jim's favorite pastimes. A proud member of the NRA, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. A conservationist, Jim belonged to many environmental groups and attended charity functions often.
Besides his father, Jim was predeceased by his father-in-law, Carl Caliciotti and mother-in-law, Audrey Caliciotti.
Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife of forty-two years, Karen (nee Caliciotti) Caliciotti Pickering with whom he joined hands in holy matrimony on June 10, 1978; three loving children, CJ Pickering of Philadelphia, PA and his son, Jackson, James Pickering and his wife Tiffany of Edison, NJ and their sons, James and Mason, and KateBryn Pickering of North Brunswick and her daughter AudreyAnna. Jim will also be missed by four siblings, Mary Jane and her husband Bob Bielen, Joanne Laposa and her partner Ron, Grace and her husband Travis Fryzowicz, and Dennis Pickering and his wife Ellen; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be missed by his cherished canine friend "Miss K".
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial funeral liturgy in celebration of his life at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, 105 Summer Road, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 on Saturday, January 18 at 3:00 p.m. with Fr. Thomas J. Serafin, KCHS officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation, and and the American Diabetes Association.
