Loving Father & WWII Veteran

Hillsborough, NJ – John Schroeder, 98, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at home with his loving family by his side. Born in Newark, NJ, son of the late Robert Emil and Lavina (Kramer) Schroeder, he was a resident of Newark, Plainfield, Kenilworth, Springfield, Mountainside and Lake Worth, FL prior to settling to Hillsborough in 1986.

John was honorably discharged from the United States Army Reserve as a Major in 1974 having faithfully served his country during World War II where he participated in all four battles in Europe.

John retired as an outside plant engineer after forty-six years of dedicated employment with NJ Bell Telephone Company in Newark, NJ having been a member of the Telephone Pioneers Association. He was a communicant of Mary, Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Hillsborough and was a member of McGuires Officers Club.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his beloved wife Eileen P. (Popko) Schroeder on July 24, 2009 with whom he shared seventy-three years of marriage and by several brothers and a sister.

He leaves behind his loving daughter Marilyn S. Leone of Hillsborough and two cherished grandchildren, Mark Leone and Michelle Leone both of Hillsborough. He will be deeply missed by many adored nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Countryside Funeral Home, 724 Route 202 North, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 today Friday, January 25 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday, January 26 from 8:45 a.m. until 9:15 a.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 26 beginning 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral liturgy at Mary, Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Hillsborough with Fr. Lancelot McGrath former Associate Pastor officiating. John will be entombed at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in East Hanover.
