Ruby Small, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend was born on November 12,1931 in Saint Thomas Jamaica, West Indies, to John and Evelyn Small.  Her father was a tax collector and her mother was a midwife.  She was the twelfth of thirteen children and the youngest girl.  Ruby often spoke with great fondness of her parents and siblings, and it was clear she adored them.

From a young age she showed a resilience and spirit that would carry her through life.  She was a great storyteller and her stories of those early years were colorful and filled with humor, joy, and love.  She went to school in St. Thomas and was trained to be a dress maker.  In addition to her training, Ruby had a natural business acumen.  She had a shop in St. Thomas where she extended kindness and generosity often helping those who could not afford to pay.

Family was the cornerstone of Ruby's life.  She was married and blessed with three wonderful children, Paulette, Keith, and Judith.  In February 1965, Ruby migrated to New York, seeking better opportunities for her family.  She worked diligently in the hotel industry ensuring her children could have a brighter future.  Her work ethic was unparalleled, and we do not believe that she ever missed a day.

Ruby was wise, her ambition and foresight led her to acquire multiple properties and she even managed a car service.  She was confident and her achievements were a testament to her hard work and determination.  She was a natural leader, witty, and was always ready with a word of wisdom or a helping hand.  Her hands were never idle and she always kept busy.  She loved music and would frequently break into dance or song.  One of the most enduring qualities Ruby possessed was her ability to connect with people.  Ruby was kind and had a way of making everyone feel special and heard.  She was a true people person, always engaging, always caring.

Ruby leaves behind three children, four grandchildren (with one sadly deceased), and nine great grandchildren.  Her generosity, kindness and unwavering strength have left an indelible mark on all of us.  We will miss her dearly, but we take comfort in knowing that here spirt lives on in the lessons she taught us, the love she shared, the stories we share and the traditions we continue.  Ruby showed us the importance of hard work and that value of family.

Thank you, Ruby, for everything you gave us.  We will miss you dearly but delight in knowing that you are at peace with you Heavenly Father.  Rest well and know that you will forever be in our hearts.
