Hillsborough, NJ- Walter E. "Walt" Mathewson, Jr. 84, entered eternal life on Monday, January 10, 2022 at home with his loving wife Nancy by his side. Born in Staten Island, NY, son of the late Walter E. and Lillian Marie (nee Anderson) Mathewson, he was a lifelong resident of Hillsborough having moved there when he was just ten years old.
Walt was employed for many years with Somerset County as Superintendent of the Mosquito Commission. Walt's greatest joy was working alongside his sons in the family trucking and excavating business, Mathewson Trucking, Inc. Prior to that Walt was co-owner of All Work Excavating and Taylor Mathewson Pumping Service. He coached his sons through Hillsborough's Pop Warner Football in his younger years and throughout his life he supported his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, having attended almost 100% of their sporting events. He was a member of the Neshanic Reformed Church.
Besides his parents, Walt was predeceased by his siblings, Andrea Martin, and Lynn Hardy and Larry Mathewson who were fraternal twins.
Walt leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Nancy Mae (nee Collins) Mathewson with whom he joined hands in marriage on August 17, 1957; three loving sons, Walter "Eddie" Mathewson, III and his wife Janice of Manville, NJ, Dale Henry Mathewson and his wife Jackie of Hillsborough, and Randall "Randy" Scott Mathewson and his wife Dawn of Roseto, PA. He will also be deeply missed by his brother, Edward Mathewson of Okeechobee, FL. Grandpa leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren, Alison, Eddie IV, Alicia, Kimberly, Dale, Jr., Vicki, Austin, and Haakon; and seven adored great-grandchildren, Ethan, Ema, Ryan, River, Dale III, Riley, and Brooklynn each of whom will miss their Gpa dearly.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing at Countryside Funeral Home, 724 Route 202 North, Three Bridges, NJ 08887 on Sunday, January 16 from 1-4 p.m.
